FAQs

What is a clinical research study?

A clinical research study evaluates a new medication or medical device. At AXIS Clinicals we typically compare a currently marketed medication (Brand name) to a generic formulation of the medication, which could be in the form of a tablet, capsule, patch, cream, etc. Some of these studies will require overnight stays, some will require collection of blood samples and some will not.

Who can participate in a study?

Anyone who meets the study specific requirements. Every study is different. For example, some studies require both men and women and others may only require one or the other. Some studies allow you to continue any medication you are currently taking, but most require you to not be on any prescription medications with the exception of oral contraceptives. Likewise, some studies allow tobacco use but the majority do not. And almost every study subjects will be screened for drugs of abuse and marijuana which, if positive, excludes you from the study.

Why should I do a study?

Aside from the financial compensation you receive from completing a study, you are helping reduce future healthcare costs for millions of individuals.

Will my personal information be kept confidential?

Yes, all of your personal information will be kept confidential unless it impacts your safety in the study. AXIS Clinicals abides by HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) standards, which is the same legal requirement as any medical clinic or hospital.

Will I get sick during a study?

With taking any medication there is the possibility for side effects. Prior to dosing you will be informed of any potential side effects you may experience. During your study, you will be monitored by trained medical staff to address any side effects / illnesses that may arise. After the study our medical staff will be available to answer any follow up questions or concerns you may have.

Why do you screen and check-in more subjects than are dosed?

It is our job to ensure every study is successfully completed per our sponsor’s requirements. In order to assure we reach full study enrollment, we must have extra subjects present in case of last minute cancellations, such as your clinical labs bouncing out of range. Subjects that are eligible to participate but are not selected are compensated for their involvement up to that point and have priority for the next study as long as they qualify.

When will I know I am in a study?

AXIS will continue to communicate with you from your recruiting call, through screening and the entire study. Usually, once you complete your screening appointment the next step would be to check into the study. Everyone who qualifies for a study has an equal chance of being dosed in a study.

What should I bring?

When checking in for a study, you should bring a picture ID, pillow, blanket or comforter, toiletries for showering and personal hygiene. Please avoid bringing toiletries which contain strong smelling perfumes. You can also bring items to keep yourself occupied. These may include books, magazines, computers or tablets, cell phones, movies, games, etc. Each of our study suites has big screen TVs with movies for you to watch and free wifi.

What should I not bring?

Please do not bring any food or beverages. Also do not bring weapons, cameras, mouthwash, furniture, inappropriate magazines or inappropriate movies.

Will food be provided?

Yes! All meals and snacks will be provided by AXIS Clinicals and are catered in by local chefs.

Where will I sleep?

Each study suite has dormitory style sleeping rooms for men and women.

What can I do during a study?

When study activities are not taking place, a large screen TV and movies will be available for your entertainment. In addition, you may work on homework, crafts (without strong smelling glues), read books, play board games or play cards.

Can I have visitors?

In general, visitors are not allowed while you are doing a study. For short term studies of 1-5 days, visitors are not allowed but forgotten items may be dropped off at our recruiting desk. For long term studies of 20 or more days, study visiting hours may be arranged.

When am I compensated for participating?

Typically, you will be paid within 48 hours of the completion of all study activities.

How often can I do a study?

Once you have completed a study at Axis Clinicals or any other study site in North America, you’ll need to wait 30 days before you can dose in another study.
